Bob Behr : Sharing His Story: So No One Will Forget the Atrocity of the Holocaust

Description

Born and raised in Berlin, Robert Behr lived with his mother, Lily, and his stepfather, Dr. Alfred Hamburger. His parents divorced when he was young. Like many German Jews, they were loyal patriots. Both Robert's father and his stepfather fought for Germany in World War I. Bob was only ten years old when the Nazis gained power in January 1933. Surviving the Nazis became his focus for the next twelve years. He and his family lived through growing threats to their very lives until the end of World War II. The Nazis instituted the Nuremberg Laws which stripped Jews of their German citizenship. Male Jews had their middle names changed to Israel; females had theirs changed to Sarah. These names would clearly identify them as Jews, and they were required to carry identity papers bearing these new names. More publicly, Jews were required to wear a yellow Star of David sewn to their outside clothing. This made it easy for the Nazis to discriminate against Jews and to make them targets of abuse. Jewish children were expelled from public schools. Bob's parents were able for a time to send him to a boarding school in Sweden. The Nazis put new banking rules into effect, restricting the exchange of German money into other currencies making it impossible for Jewish families to pay tuition. The school was forced to close. Recognizing the growing danger to Jews living in Germany, the Jewish community in Sweden offered to keep the children until it was safe for them to return. This presented Bob's family with a terrible dilemma. Would Bob be safer in Sweden? What if they never saw him again? Ultimately, Bob's mother decided to bring him home to Berlin. The rioting and plunder of Kristallnacht occurred on November 9th and 10th of 1938. Like thousands of other Jewish men, Bob's father was arrested. He was sent to Buchenwald concentration camp but was later released. Bob's family was evicted from their apartment. The Jewish Community Service helped them find two rooms in an elderly Jewish woman's apartment where they stayed until Bob's parents were arrested by the Gestapo. Two days later, Robert was also arrested and sent to Theresienstadt concentration camp. Lilly was assigned to work in the laundry, and Alfred to work in the hospital. Young Bob had the disheartening job of transporting bodies for burial. When the war was over, Bob's family began restoring their lives. Bob immigrated to the United States but his family stayed in Germany. When he enlisted in the US Army, he asked to be assigned to Berlin so he could care for his mother. His fluency in German made him a very valuable resource. He was sent to Berlin, where he interrogated former Nazis. Today he volunteers at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum since 2001.Bob believes it is very important to educate future generations about the Holocaust. "I want to inform the world of what can happen if you live under a dictatorship which detests your very being," he says. "We [Holocaust survivors] are dying out, and we need to prevent future holocausts."

Wing to Wing, Oar to Oar : Readings on Courting and Marrying

Description

Despite current concerns for "family values" and the dissolution of marriages, Amy A. and Leon R. Kass see very little attention being paid to what makes for marital success. They argue there are no longer socially prescribed forms of conduct that help guide young men and women in the direction of matrimony; the very concepts of "wooing" and "courting" seem archaic. Yet they see major discontent with the present situation and detect among their students certain longings - for friendship, for wholeness, for a life that is serious and deep, and for associations that are trustworthy and lasting - longings they do not realize could be largely satisfied by marrying well. "Wing to Wing, Oar to Oar: Courting and Marrying" is an anthology of source readings offered as a response to the contemporary cultural silence surrounding love that leads to marriage. It addresses important questions that emerge not from theory, but from practice: Why marry? Is this love? How can I find and win the right one to marry? What about sex? Why a wedding and the promises of marriage? What can married life be like? Using readings taken mainly from classic texts of Homer, Herodotus, Plato, Aquinas, Erasmus, Shakespeare, Rousseau, Austen, Tolstoy, C.S. Lewis, Miss Manners and many others, this collection challenges our unexamined opinions, expands our sympathies, elevates our gaze, and introduces us to possibilities open to human beings in everyday life that may be undreamt of in our current philosophizing. This unapologetically pro-marriage anthology is intended to help young people of marriageable age and their parents think about the meaning, purpose and virtues of marriage and, especially, about selecting a suitable spouse.

Eat by Choice, Not by Habit: Practical Skills for Creating a Healthy Relationship with Your Body and Food

Description

Combining sound dietary information with the techniques of the Nonviolent Communication (NVC) process, this booklet shifts the focus from simple weight loss to changing the ways readers relate to food and their food choices. Eating is a need, but for those caught in cycles of over-consumption and dieting, it's often a poor attempt to meet other needs, such as emotional fulfillment. When reconnected to actual needs, however, consumption habits turn into nutritional choices, signaling greater freedom. Find practical strategies to break out of unhealthy eating cycles by becoming aware of your needs. Rather than a proscriptive fad diet, readers learn to dig deeper to the emotional consciousness that underlies our eating patterns. Learn to enjoy the tastes, smells and sensations of healthful eating once again.

Sacred Cows: The Truth about Divorce and Marriage

Description

Drs. Astro and Danielle Teller know better than most that finding the right partner in life doesn't always happen the first time around. Through their own divorces they learned how widely held cultural assumptions and misinformation that nobody thinks to question-what they refer to as "sacred cows"-create unnecessary heartache for people who are already suffering through a terrible time. Do you think, for example, that the divorce rate in the United States is rising? Or that children are harmed by divorce? Most people do, but it turns out that neither of these notions is supported by the data. Combining the rigor that has established them as leaders in their respective fields along with a dose of good-natured humor, the Tellers ask readers to take a fresh look at seven common sacred cows: the Holy Cow, the Expert Cow, the Selfish Cow, the Defective Cow, the Innocent Victim Cow, the One True Cow, and the Other Cow. This is not a book that is "for" marriage or "for" divorce, but "for" the freedom to decide how to live most honestly and happily either as part of a couple or a single person. In the same way that Esther Perel's bestselling Mating in Captivity gave couples a fresh perspective on their married life, so Sacred Cows invites reader to question assumptions and conventional wisdom. It offers a smart, insightful, and sympathetic view for those in a marital crisis, marriage counsellors, or anyone looking to gain a fresh perspective on one of our most cherished and misunderstood institutions.

Time and again, Freedman demonstrates that the inherent unpredictability of this environment-subject to chance events, the efforts of opponents, the missteps of friends-provides strategy with its challenge and its drama. Armies or corporations or nations rarely move from one predictable state of affairs to another, but instead feel their way through a series of states, each one not quite what was anticipated, requiring a reappraisal of the original strategy, including its ultimate objective. Thus the picture of strategy that emerges in this book is one that is fluid and flexible, governed by the starting point, not the end point. A brilliant overview of the most prominent strategic theories in history, from David's use of deception Praying for Your Unborn Child pdf against Goliath, to the modern use of game theory in economics, this masterful volume sums up a lifetime of reflection on strategy.

Praying for Your Unborn Child

Description

What might happen if pregnant mothers and expectant fathers learned to pray for their baby - even before its birth? Francis and Judith MacNutt believe that if enough couples start praying for their unborn children a gentle revolution will take place. Those children will become more disposed to love God, happier and more secure. A practical book filled with helpful advice and case studies, now reissued with a new cover.

Time and again, Freedman demonstrates that the inherent unpredictability of this environment-subject to chance events, the efforts of opponents, the missteps of friends-provides strategy with its challenge and its drama. A group of terrorists has descended on the Executive Mansion, and gained access by means of a violent massacre that has left dozens of innocent bystanders murdered. Through the quick actions of the Secret Service, the president is evacuated to his underground bunker - but not before almost one hundred hostages are taken. While the politicians and the military leaders argue over how to negotiate with the terrorists, one man is sent to break through the barrage of panicked responses and political agendas surrounding the crisis. Jacques Derrida: On Cosmopolitanism and Forgiveness

On Cosmopolitanism and Forgiveness

Description

One of the world's most famous philosophers, Jacques Derrida, explores difficult questions in this important and engaging book. Is it still possible to uphold international hospitality and justice in the face of increasing nationalism and civil strife in so many countries? Drawing on examples of treatment of minority groups in Europe, he skilfully and accessibly probes the thinking that underlies much of the practice, and rhetoric, that informs cosmopolitanism. What have duties and rights to do with hospitality? Should hospitality be grounded on a private or public ethic, or even a religious one? This fascinating book will be illuminating reading for all.

Where Is the Great Wall?

Description

More than two thousand years ago, with his land under constant attack from nomads, the First Emperor of China came up with a simple solution: build a wall to keep out enemies. It was a wall that kept growing and growing. But its construction came at a huge cost: it is believed that more than a million Chinese died building it, earning the wall its nickname--the longest cemetery on earth. Through the story of the wall, Patricia Brennan Demuth is able to tell the story of China itself, the rise and fall of dynasties, the greatness of its culture, and its present-day status as a Communist world power.
